FAQs for New Scouts
Q: Where can I get a Boy Scout Handbook? A: The Boy Scout Handbook is the official BSA manual. One may be perchased at the scout store at Flag Plaza (1275 Bedford Ave. 412-471-2927) or ordered online at scoutstuff.org. Q: Where can a new scout or parent find out the basic information they need to know about Troop 215? A: A good resource is "The Scoop on Scouting." This is a pamphlet put together by the troop that covers many basic topics. This pamphlet is available on the forms page. Q: What are the ranks, and what are the requirements for each? A: The ranks are as follows: Scout, Tenderfoot, Second Class, First Class, Star, Life, and Eagle. The rank requirements are explained in detail in The Scout Handbook. More information on the Tenderfoot, Second Class, and First Class ranks is available at www.scouting.org. Click "Boyscouts" and then "What's New". There are new requirements and some changed requirements for Tenderfoot, Second Class and First Class effective 2008. These are explained on the National Council Website. Click here to see the new requirments. Q: What do I take on a campout? A: A two-page camp-out checklist is available in the forms section of this website, or you can click on the following links: Campout Checklist page 1, Campout Checklist page 2 Q: What makes a complete uniform? A: The scout uniform is desribed on pages 12-13 of the Scout Handbook. A guide to the official placment of insignia can be found at www.scouting.org Q: Do we need to know the Scout Oath and Law? A: You will be asked to repeat the Scout Oath, Law, Slogan, and Motto for any rank above Scout. Our troop repeats The Scout Oath, The Scout Law, and The Outdoor Code at each meeting. Q: What is a patrol? A: Patrols are groups of approximately 6-8 boys. Troop 215 has 7 patrols. All new scouts automatically start in the Tiger Patrol. Older scouts, 16-18, are in the Eagle Patrol. Q: What is a Patrol Leader? A: Each patrol selects one of its members as a patrol leader. The duties of a patrol leader and other information can be found at www.scouting.org.
